Paper-Based Cuvette for Blood Separation in the Quantification of Neonatal Bilirubin Levels
Design Challenge
Neonatal jaundice affects over half of all infants, which if allowed to progress may result in irreversible neurological impairments such as kernicterus. Thus, it is important to monitor serum bilirubin levels closely in infants who suffer from jaundice so that phototherapy treatment may be appropriately administered and concluded. While serum bilirubin levels may be measured through spectral measurements of venous blood, existing methods are expensive, resource-intensive, and infeasible for implementation in the developing world. We endeavor to develop a paper-based cuvette for blood separation that is an improvement over current blood separation techniques and cuvettes for spectrophotometric analysis currently being used in the developing world.
