IV DRIP: Intravenous Dehydration Relief in Pediatrics
Design Challenge
1.5 million children die annually due to dehydration in developing countries, constituting 8% of deaths. Many of these deaths could be prevented if these children were given intravenous saline; however, clinicians hesitate to give IV therapy due to a lack of a volume regulator.
Design Summary
IV DRIP (Intravenous Dehydration Relief in Pediatrics) has developed a mechanical volume regulator for intravenous therapy in the developing world. Children in developing countries who are treated for dehydration with IV therapy are at a constant risk of overhydration, which leads to thousands of deaths annually, because clinics are chronically understaffed and cannot afford volume regulators.
Our device is a low-cost ($80), mechanical, durable, autonomous, and easy-to-use volume regulator that employs a lever arm with a movable counterweight (similar to a physician’s scale) to incrementally dispense IV fluid. The system utilizes a change in torque as an IV bag drains to activate a spring which then clamps the IV tubing. Testing demonstrates that the device dispenses fluid within 25 mL of the desired volume (p<0.0000001) in increments of 50 mL. The device underwent field evaluation in Malawi and Lesotho in Summer 2012, and the team has been awarded over $40,000 in grants and $13,000 in competition prize winnings.
