Primate Puzzle Feeder
Design Challenge
The Houston Zoo has requested a puzzle feeder that enables orangutans to mimic their natural foraging behavior. This puzzle feeder must be durable and meet all safety requirements, as well as provide the primates with a source of challenging mental stimulation every day.
Design Summary
Our team has designed an puzzle box with a maze top. This feeder is a wall- or floor-mounted rectangular box with interchangeable maze tops that can be slid into place over the top of the box as a lid. Inside the maze box, a smaller box will contain food and will be attached to a rod that the orangutans must pull through the maze. There will be an open hole at the bottom of the maze with which the food box will align, and once the orangutans have completed the maze, they will be able to reach into the hole and obtain the food that is stored in the little box.
