Our team aims to design a Smartphone-based microscope attachment. Our system will be capable of resolving 4 micron features, providing multiple illumination conditions through LEDs, and giving our user a panoramically stitched image containing information from multiple pictures in an intuitive app that handles the communication between all of these parts.
Our current prototype has met all of our objectives. We are able to resolve 3 micron features using a 40x objective lens. Our system supports the use of 10 narrowband LEDs from Ultraviolet to Near Infra Red, including the whole visible spectrum. Currently, our app is able to control an MCU via Bluetooth and control the LEDs, as well as take video or multiple images and send them to a server, which runs 2D planar stitching algorithms, which combine images into 50 Megapixel images and can stitch tens of pictures in less than 30 minutes. The app is also able to take video while rotating the color of LEDs, thus providing multiple illuminations for the same subject and returning an individual image for each illumination. The app also receives all the finalize images under the illumination conditions we chose.
