Environmental Remediation of Bissonnet Redevelopments
Design Challenge
The redevelopment sites along Bissonnet Street between Kirby Drive and Greenbriar Drive in Houston are currently contaminated with releases from dry cleaners, leaking underground storage tanks (LUST) at gas stations, and auto repair shops. Results of environmental site investigation indicate soil contamination of five contaminants which pose concerns of vapor intrusion into new buildings for the development. In addition, groundwater under the site is contaminated by six contaminants and requires cleanup to meet the State of Texas standards.
Design Summary
To address potential vapor intrusion, risks of vapor intrusion were calculated for each site. A vapor barrier design is proposed to mitigate vapor intrusion problems as required. A long term remediation plan was developed for groundwater contamination. The plan consists of in-situ chemical oxidation for contaminant destruction, pumping wells for plume containment, and air-stripping for water treatment.
