Project Title
Prediction of acute-on-chronic liver failure in pediatric biliary atresia patients
Design Challenge
Previous research show that patients experiencing acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) have poor survival outcomes while on the transplant waitlist but can have good outcomes if they undergo a liver transplant. Currently, ACLF is not well studied for the pediatric population. Enhanced knowledge is needed to better understand clinical parameters which can indicate the development of ACLF. This can help clinicians better assess a patient’s priority for transplant while on the waiting list.
Design Summary
This project analyzes data from a retrospective medical record review of biliary atresia patients listed for transplant at Texas Children’s Hospital. The goals of this project is to identify clinical parameters that are indicative of the development of ACLF as well as to propose a statistical model which can predict ACLF development based on a patient’s condition at the time of listing on the transplant waiting list.
