Brays Bayou Channel Improvements and Greenbriar Bridge Redesign
Design Challenge
Brays Bayou is a developed floodway that runs through the heart of Houston, flowing through the Texas Medical Center and near the Rice University campus. Since the re-development of the channel in the 1950’s and 1960’s, rapid urbanization has increased the requisite for quick conveyance of storm water through the city into Galveston Bay. In some locations along the Bayou, the 100-year storm overflows the banks of the channel, causing severe flooding, property damage, and loss of life. In the early 2000s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Harris County Flood Control District launched Project Brays, which outlined specifications for the redevelopment of the Bayou. Thus far, Project Brays has made great strides in modifying the channel to accommodate current conditions; yet, there are still areas that require improvement. Our team has been tasked with modifying portions of the channel and redesigning the corresponding Greenbriar Bridge. Our objective in redesigning the channel is to reduce the 100-year floodplain throughout the Bayou in order to protect a new commercial development at 7200 Main Street, as well as a residential neighborhood in Meyerland which recently faced extensive damage due to the 2015 Memorial Day flood. Our objective in redesigning the bridge is to reduce its backwater effect on the channel, and to create a signature design that reflects the vision of the 7200 Main Street development.
