Design Challenge
To clean up contaminated groundwater at hazardous waste sites, the remediation industry must inject cleanup agents into the subsurface. The conventional approach for this $20 billion/year industry is to inject these agents (“amendments”) via small diameter injection wells, but this approach is expensive and is unable to deliver the amendments into low permeability zones such as clays and silts. Our team's goal is to develop a new method for treating groundwater contaminated by chlorinated solvents using zero-valent iron as amendment and injecting it with existing geotechnical engineering equipment. This process will be tested at a metal parts disposal site in Maryland.
