Project Title
An Inexpensive Solution for Colostomy Bags in Low-Resource Settings
Design Challenge
Doctors in Nigeria have contacted Rice 360 requesting a new solution for ostomy care systems in low-resource settings. 70.8% of the Nigerian population lives on <$1/day, so the design should preferably cost under $1 USD per week. Due to the high cost of traditional ostomy care systems in developing countries, colostomy patients often struggle to care for their new stoma and tend to utilize solutions that lack efficacy and harbor bacteria. Improvised bags increase rates of irritation, infection, and other complications. Our design is intended to improve the quality of life for colostomy recipients while remaining within the budget for a Nigerian patient.
