Project Title
Low-Cost Universal High Flow Nasal Cannula
Design Challenge
High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) devices are the preferred method to administer heated, humidified, high-flow oxygen therapy in neonates and children for a range of respiratory illnesses. Despite the proven clinical benefits in pediatrics, current commercial HFNCs remain inaccessible to low income countries due to prohibitive costs and proprietary materials. Team Let’s Get This Breath, a group of senior bioengineering students, aims to design and build a low-cost HFNC device to administer heated, humidified, high-flow oxygen therapy for neonates and children in developing countries. An inexpensive, easy to operate HFNC that is compatible with non-proprietary tubing will address the disproportionately high mortality rates due to pediatric respiratory infection in low resource settings.
