Microwave Imaging System
Design Challenge
About half of all American women over forty do not seek the recommended annual breast screening. For the most part, this is due to the painful compression of the breast that is required in mammography. Additionally, mammography machines cost five figures, making them less accessible. Recent progress in microwave imaging of the dielectric properties of tissues offers solutions to these problems. Our team must design a breast cancer screening tool that offers a relatively low purchasing cost to medical professionals and total comfort to women everywhere.
Design Summary
Using an array of microwave antennas and common, discrete, electrical components, we will produce useful maps of the dielectric properties of present breast tissues. Our system uses near-field imaging techniques and rests entirely on a single PCB. Finally, our system will not compress the breast and will cost a few hundred dollars to build.
