Shell Evaporation
Design Challenge
Gas stations in both developed and developing nations suffer financially from the mandatory removal of groundwater samples. Legislation requires this water to be removed as hazardous waste regardless of its actual contamination level. The average cost for current methods of removal is $500 per 55-gal drum depending on the distance from a disposal site. Most of the disposed water is drinkable or has very low gasoline levels. Thus, the use of energy to collect, transport, and store these virtually clean water samples is inefficient and costly to the stations and the company. The solution must propose a method to evaporate water from a 55-gallon drum within every quarter, every 3 months.
