Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen
Facility Use Contract and Policies

These guidelines are for the benefit of the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen and its users. The use of the Design Kitchen is a privilege and students are expected to follow each of the policies below.



  • Do not allow any unauthorized people into the building even if they appear to be students!
    You will be issued 24/7 access on your ID card.
  • Report all accidents, injuries or near misses to Director or Technicians immediately. In the event of an emergency CALL THE CAMPUS EMERGENCY NUMBER AT 6000 FROM ANY CAMPUS PHONE- or 713-348-6000 from your cell phone.
  • Alcohol and illegal drugs are not allowed in the building. You may not use the building or any of the equipment if under the influence alcohol or drugs.
  • Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building.
  • No one may work alone in any of the specialty shops. Technicians must be present in the building for the machine shop, and hand power sawing (even if done in the main assembly area), laser cutter and 3D printing equipment to be used. You must meet with and obtain assistance or training, as required, from the appropriate technician if you need to use machining equipment in the machine shop or loading dock storage area, electronics equipment or specialty tools. Only authorized technicians are allowed to operate the rapid prototyping systems.
  • Everyone must wear closed-toe shoes and eye protection (safety glasses, goggles or face shield) when using hand tools, power tools, or enter the machine shop and wet lab areas. You must wear ear protection as posted or described in the equipment specific training.
  • Everyone working in the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen must adhere to all posted safety guidelines and other posted notices.
  • Tools and equipment in the OED-K are for the express purpose of working on engineering design projects and are NOT to be taken from the building for other purposes.
  • Food or drinks are not allowed in the computer lab, wet lab, laser cutter or 3D printer rooms or machine shop. Any food or drinks in the main assembly area MUST be cleaned up and removed before leaving the Design Kitchen. Any food in the conference rooms must be cleaned up, including cleaning the tables prior to departure. YOU MUST LABEL YOUR FOOD. If food it not labled, it will be considered free for anyone to take.
  • Keep your work area neat and organized. Put away all tools and test equipment when not actively in use. You will be asked to clean your area if it gets excessively messy.


In the event that you do not comply with the guidelines, your privileges to use the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen may be rescinded.
