Ortho-Vibe: Intraoral Orthodontic Device Utilizing Microvibrations to Accelerate Dental Remodeling
Design Challenge
Over 4 million people are undergoing orthodontic treatment for dental realignment at any given time. However, many people with malocclusion decide to forego treatment because dental braces must be worn for 18 to 30 months. OrthoAccel’s AcceleDent® Aura aids patients with accelerated bone remodeling through the device’s delivery of constant vibrations. Daily use has been shown to reduce orthodontic treatment length by up to 50 percent, but the bulky and conspicuous design of the current device hinders comfortable operation necessary for patient compliance. Our challenge is to design a low cost, small extraoral or strictly intraoral, ergonomic activator with efficient vibratory technology for an accelerated orthodontic treatment device.
Design Summary
The team aims to modify OrthoAccel’s AcceleDent® Aura, a device that decreases treatment time for dental realignment by sending vibrations evenly across the teeth at a frequency of 30 ± 2 Hz for a set treatment time of 20 minutes per day. Our design improves patient comfort by reducing the size of the current activator while maintaining the original force and frequency. We utilize a micro coin motor that translates vibrations through an embedded plastic bite-plate, creating an intra-oral activator. Our final prototype is made of non-medical grade silicone and ABS plastic. The prototype has been successfully tested for force, frequency, durability through drop testing and water resistance (Last updated: 05/02/2014).
