Computer Vision-Based Technology for Open Spot Detection
Design Challenge
Our team's mission is to take the pain out parking so drivers and parking operators never have to circle around wondering where an open space is located. We will design an outdoor parking management system characterized by cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and ease of installation. We will develop an array of computer vision based-algorithms to detect open spots in outdoor environments and build a networking system that connects local detection devices, central server, and user interface while minimizing network congestion. We will deploy and test the ParkiT system at Rice University's West Lot.
Design Summary
The design of our system has four main components. First, we will collect parking data through camera images in a parking lot. Existing camera infrastructure will be used when appropriate and additional cameras will be installed when necessary. Next, we will securely transmit that data to a storage server and a computer. Then, we will run a computer vision algorithm to detect open spaces. Finally, the results will be displayed on an user interface for parking operators to easily visualize the current state of parking availability in their lot.
