Project Title
A Continuous Intermittent Neonatal Gastric Suction Device for Low-Resource Settings
Design Challenge
Infants with gastrointestinal diseases, such as necrotizing enterocolitis, often experience an accumulation of fluid and digestive content called abdominal distension. When left untreated, it can result in fatal aspiration from abdominal fluids and exacerbate the severity of gastrointestinal diseases. We aim to create an affordable, locally-sourced, and automated device that can safely and effectively remove excess abdominal fluid from neonates suffering from abdominal distension. By creating a device that uses low intermittent suction and is durable, portable, independently powered, and reusable, we aim to close the gap in accessibility to proper gastric suction care and help reduce preventable neonatal deaths in the Dominican Republic.
