FRESHMAN DESIGN Students will come away from this workshop being able to design three-dimensional objects using a free, web-based Computer Aided Design program called TinkerCAD. TinkerCAD can help you share visual ideas quickly and simply.
We strongly recommend that every team has at least two members attend this workshop. The workshop will take place in the OEDK Computer Lab.
Please bring a laptop and mouse if you have one.
This workshop will be coordinated by Reece Lusich. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions, or if you absolutely cannot make this time. If there is enough interest, another time may be scheduled-please add your name to the waitlist if all slots are filled.
This workshop is for students currently enrolled in ENGI 120/FWIS 188 ONLY
Number of Possible Participants: 28
Get an inside look at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen. Lab assistants will be on hand to show you around our maker space where engineering undergraduates design solutions to real-world projects. Don't forget to ask why it's called a kitchen!
Two open house sessions are available for your convenience:
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
in the OEDK – Lunch will be provided.
Summer 2024 Program options**:

International Summer Experience in Engineering Design
Hand Tools – Introductory Level
This class will teach students the practical skills necessary to use basic hand tools and powered tools. Topics and tools covered include: cutting tools, shaping tools, fasteners, adhesives, and finishing tools. Students will work in teams to build a birdhouse constructed using these techniques and procedures. Students will come away from this workshop with the knowledge of the correct use of and ability to operate all of the hand tools and some of the powered tools at the OEDK.
This workshop will be taught at a basic level for all skill levels. No prior experience with any tool is necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and clothes that can hold up to elbow grease.
Number of Possible Participants: 15 per section. No more than 2 non-Freshman Design (ENGI 120/220 and FWIS 188) participants per session. Must be a currently-associated Rice student, faculty or staff to participate.
Topic - TBD
Around the Kitchen Table events are round table discussions that will highlight ongoing engineering design work of our current undergraduate students.
Each evening will focus on a particular theme in engineering. Industry or medical professionals, current or retired, as well as faculty and staff, are invited to share dinner with the students as they present their design challenges and solutions, and then seek advice about their design projects from seasoned engineers.
ALL Participants Must REGISTER. We kindly request participants be adults age 18 and above.
Go to the Around the Kitchen Table webpage for more information about upcoming dinner events.
