Solar Car Chassis Design
Design Challenge
Our team seeks to design and build a lighter, more efficient, and safer body and chassis for the Rice Solar Car Team. Our product will compete in the 2015 Shell Eco Marathon.
Design Summary
Transportation is a critical use of energy that drives our economies and daily lives. To ensure future sustainability, the next generation of electric vehicles must be ultra-efficient. One aspect of car design that is critical to performance is the chassis, which bears the primary load of the vehicle and adds significantly to the weight of the car.

The team has finished the design and fabrication of the main chassis structure. We have successfully worked with the solar car team to interface vehicle systems such as the suspension, steering, power train, and electronics.

On April 9-12, Electric Avenue and the Rice Solar Car Team competed in the 2015 Shell Eco Marathon Americas. Over the course of four days, the team tirelessly tested, fixed, and improved the various subsystems. With a lightweight and rigid chassis developed by Electric Avenue, the Solar Car Team was able to achieve 900 MPGe, the best in the Urban Concept Battery-Electric category.
