Self-Spotting Dumbbell
Design Challenge
Athletes frequently train with dumbbells due to the increased activation of stabilization muscles. However, lifting dumbbells alone can be unsafe because of the need for a "spotter"- someone to watch the athlete and provide assistance if the athlete is unable to lift the weight. The goal of this project is to work with the Rice Athletic Department to create a device that safely spots athletes, while allowing for the natural, free motion of the dumbbell during various lifts. However, the device must be able to intervene when the athlete is no longer able to perform the exercise.
