Project Title
Recycling Plastic Filament
Design Challenge
3D printing allows university students in design labs across Africa to effectively solve local issues. The filament required for 3D printing is shipped to them from the US, which has proven costly and inconsistent. Current systems designed to produce filament on-site may require components which are also not available locally and therefore face the same issues. To solve the problem of acquiring 3D printing filament cheaply and quickly, KIM K will develop an energy-efficient and reliable system using materials available in Rice360 partner countries to recycle commonly available plastic bottles into thermoplastic filament equivalent in performance to commercially available products.
