Design Challenge
The Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden utilizes aerobic hot composting, which serves to create heat and to produce compost. The heat is used in the winter to help germinate seedlings, and the compost is used to fertilize plants in the garden. The current composters in the greenhouse are made of fixed wooden slats creating a long rectangle for materials to go in. There are many problems with this solution, such as the dead space it creates when not in use and its lack of mobility. Our team’s goal is to design a portable compost bin for The Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden that has the weight-bearing capacity to hold trays of germinating seedlings because existing solutions are either only sturdy or mobile.
