Automated Lighting Solution for Operating Rooms
Design Challenge
The state-of-the-art for operating room lighting is not satisfactory for practicing surgeons. Most systems do not aim light at the target and the light is not bright enough. Further, constant bumping into cumbersome surgical lights make it difficult to maintain OR sterility. Finally, one surgeon has estimated that adjusting the lighting takes about 25% of all OR time. Headlamps were developed to address this problem, but they caused a new set of problems. Using your head position to focus light causes neck pain and repetitive-stress injuries due to long surgeries.

A solution would be a lighting system that is not attached to the surgeon and can be easily aimed and focused on the work area. The surgeon would have some means of defining the work area and then motorized lights would position themselves to fill that area with light.
